British driver's license valid after Brexit

Since the Brexit referendum in 2016, negotiations between the UK and the European community have not stopped planning a possible exit from the country with the lowest possible burden for both parties. One of the consequences of Brexit affects driving licences. What will happen to the British card when it comes to trading in Spain and in any other EU country?

In our country, two different scenarios have been proposed to solve this problem. On the other hand, if the withdrawal agreement is finally issued, the recognition of driver's licenses will continue until December 31, 2020. However, since meetings to define a strategy seem difficult, it cannot be said with absolute certainty that an agreement will be signed.

Regulations governing driver's licenses in the UK

On March 2, 2019, the Royal Decree entered into force with emergency measures being taken in the event of the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from the European Union without reaching the agreement under Article 50 of the EU Treaty. In article 22 of this standard, the subject of driver's licenses was referred to:

"Valid driving licences issued by the British authorities will enable holders to drive in our country for nine months, from the date of the UK's withdrawal from the EU."

This means that people with British citizenship who reside or work in Spain must replace their driver's license with a national licence within 9 months of leaving the country from European territory. If the passing time is allowed without changing the license, the holders will only be able to temporarily move for 6 months, as is the case with driver's licenses from foreign foreign countries. Understand this period from entering Spain or from the date of legal residence.

The Royal Decree also stipulates that "a driver's license may be replaced, provided that the current system of verification is maintained, in accordance with the conditions stipulated by the licenses issued by eu member states, all in accordance with the provisions of the current traffic regulations."

How is the British card changed in Spain?

The procedure for changing the British driver's license for another citizen is the same as in the case of other drivers from an EU country. To do this, it is necessary to request an appointment in advance through the Electronic Headquarters of the General Administration of Traffic (DGT), the selection of the province and the procedures for the exchange of european driver's license.
